Philosophy

Leader: Eric Stockwell

Looking for a new leader

This Group will meet on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month from 10.30 – 12.00 in Northampton.

The intention is to approach the subject in a manner suitable for anyone coming to it for the first time and to show that it is an activity and a way of thinking about certain sorts of questions – its most distinctive feature is the use of logical argument.

The subject is wide so there will be a need to be selective but the sort of questions that have been considered traditionally by the discipline are those concerning ‘the meaning of life’, religion ethics, the mind, and the external world to name but a few.

Attention will be paid to the ideas of some of the major figures but to deal with them all would be impossible.

As food for thought, consider the pronouncement made by the philosopher Descartes – ‘Cogito ergo sum’ – I think, therefore I am!

   Phone Eric for more details.

This will be an introduction to Philosophy for anyone who is approaching the subject for the first time and who is interested in lively debate !!

The suggested text is Philosophy : The Basics by Nigel Warburton which can be purchased at Waterstones or on Amazon.

This takes a topic based approach, considering the key areas of Philosophy.
