Computing for Beginners

COMPUTERS FOR BEGINNERS

It is only possible to take a maximum of 8 participants on a first-come-first-paid-first-served basis (and a minimum of 6). 

Assuming the course is full, there will be a charge of £12 per person, payable in advance, to cover venue costs.  If we are not ‘full’, the charge may be slightly higher.

The curriculum will be:

Week 1             Hardware

      • The ‘box’, the ‘mouse’, VDU, keyboard, printer/scanner, external hard drive, speakers, USB ports, etc.  The laptop/notebook
      • Use of a mouse and/or the keyboard.
      • Introduction to software – types of e.g. anti-virus, word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, graphics, etc

Week 2             The basics

      • Windows and why, desktop, menu structures, files and folders, how to save work

   Week 3              Microsoft Word

  • Creation of a document using Word
  • Creation of an e-mail

   Week 4             The Internet

  • What is it?
  • What can it do? Or, rather, what can you do with it!!
  • Web browsers

These are broad outlines.  If anyone wants anything else and time permits, we can look at that/them as we go along.
               
This course is for “COMPLETE beginners"!!

Computing for Improvers

This course will be held in the Computer Suite at the Northampton Age Concern Centre at 31, Billing Road, on Friday afternoons from 2 until 3.40pm.

            The course will consist of four sessions, each covering a specific topic, so please only sign up for the lesson(s) you require and are able to attend, to avoid other people being disappointed, as there are maximum of 8 places per session.

This course is only suitable for members who have already mastered skills in the use of the keyboard, mouse and the internet.

They are NOT suitable for beginners.

            Each session will cost £5.50, to cover the use of a computer and any useful handouts. This fee must accompany your request for a place at each session.

There is no facility for car parking at Age Concern.  The nearest place is Palmerston Road, off Billing Road, which has a 2 hour free zone.

The dates and topics for this course are:-

Week 1 – Computer housekeeping, moving files and tidying up the hard drive. And Tables for simple lists and calculations

Week 2 – Internet use, sending e-mails and attachments and searching and buying online.

Week 3 . – Working with Publishing software to make cards, posters etc.

Week 4 – EXCEL for finance and address lists + merging to envelopes and labels.

 

            Once I have sorted through replies, I will let you know whether you have a place for the date(s) you chose.

P C Helpmates

Times and venues are various but meetings are usually on the 1st Monday of the month from 2.30-4.30 pm at the Leaders or Members homes.

  The group is a forum to assist each other with computer problems by co-operating and exchanging experiences and solutions.

NEWTECH

(formerly RUTechshy)

A GROUP HAS BEEN FORMED FOR DISCUSSION, INFORMATION SHARING AND POSSIBLE DEMONSTRATION, OF ALL MATTERS CONCERNING CONTEMPORARY DEVICES USED IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY.

These would include computers, digital cameras and audio equipment.

 Examples are D.A.B radios, MP3 players, I-Pods, mobile phones, memory cards, flash drives, digital books (E-book readers), laptops, computer peripherals (e.g. mouses, keyboards, monitors etc) and many others.

All members would be invited to actively participate in the exchange and gathering of information and ideas. 

Much more time would be devoted to specifics, unlike RUTechShy workshops where so much detail was crammed into a limited period.

Help would be given re picture (images) and music download – BRING YOUR LAPTOP/CAMERA/PHONE etc.

LOCATION - Weston Favell Library, Weston Favell Centre.

Every first Friday of the month

13:30/14:00pm start

 

It must be emphasised that this venue has many distinct advantages including the library where computers can be hired. 

They are FREE of charge on Fridays (subject to availability).

Inexpensive computer tuition is occasionally offered by the library service.

Technical magazines are available and books, C.D.’s and videos etc can be borrowed.

There are cafés, restaurants, shops and services in the main centre.

Bus stops (Numbers 1, 8 & 16 buses) are immediately outside on the ground floor.

There is a lift and a toilet for the disabled.

Petrol & garage services are close by. 

There are plenty of free parking areas.
